Contributed by Akeley farm, Fort Street, Presque Isle through Presque Isle Historical Society
Description
The George and Beulah Akeley Farm on Fort Street, now State Street, east of Presque Isle.
In 1923, a fire started in the barn and swept through the house, taking the house, the barn, the new car, and the farm machinery.
Eventually, Beulah Akeley became a librarian at the Presque Isle Library, and George became a caretaker at the Methodist Church in Presque Isle.
The March 1945 edition of the Reader's Digest has a story of Beulah in the article "The Most Unforgettable Character I've Met."
