Description
The painting by William E. Norton (1843-1916), a Boston marine painter, memorializes the Civil War battle, off the coast of France, between the USS Kearsarge and the Confederate ship, the Alabama.
The Kearsarge, captained by John Winslow, sank the Alabama in June 1864, ending the Confederate ship's attacks on Union vessels.
