Description
David Merritt is holding barrel and Ray Merritt is standing as they load full barrels of potatoes onto a 1936 Chevrolet potato barrel truck on the Merritt farm on Pease Road in Mapleton.
This method of loading took two persons to load the full barrels. Frequently another person was on back to load the barrels. The truck body is built low to make it easier to load barrels. Notice the box frame over the rear wheels.
When the truck was loaded, the barrels were shipped to a potato storage house to be emptied.
About this time (1940) mechanical loaders were used to load barrels, making it easier for one person to load barrels.
