Description
Perley Dodge was well known in Easton for being the rural mail carrier on Route 2 for 45 years. He was born in Easton to Loremzo and Gertrude (Lindsey) Dodge in 1896 and began serving as part time mail carrier while still in high school. He was promoted to full time in 1918. For the first 16 years, he traveled his route with a single wagon with driving horses. His route took an average of 11 hours a day.
Over the years he served under 5 postmasters. When he retired, he received a certificate of merit which read: "Perley L. Dodge has been faithful to the Postal Service for over 45 years record, and serviced each individual most conscientiously. A personality liked by all, honest and courteous." (Bangor Daily News, August 2, 1963).
He married Mary Soucia (Goodyer) in 1920. He retired from the postal service in 1963 and died in 1975 in Easton.
