Description
A southerly view of Pleasant Street in Topsham, with Perkins Street on the left, after a heavy snowstorm in 1887.
The second house from the right is the William Whitten house. Whitten owned a woolen mill on the Androscoggin between Topsham and Brunswick.
He died in 1877, but his wife, Myra Rowell Whitten and daughters still lived in the house. The daughters, Emily and Sarah, lived in the house all their lives - till 1919 and 1941, respectively.
Sarah left the house to the town and it served as the public library for the next 60 years.
The next house to the left is the Rev. Amos Wheeler house, childhood home to George A. and Henry W. Wheeler, authors of "The History of Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell", published in 1878.
