Description
Increase Sumner Kimball built this home on what was once Wentworth Street in Sanford. (The street name was changed to St. Ignatius Street in the 1990s.)
Kimball raised his family here including young Sumner Increase Kimball, who entered Bowdoin College at age 16, and become the only Superintendent of the U.S. Lifesaving Service.
Sumner Kimball's last acts were to convince Congress to combine the U.S. Lifesaving Service with the Coast Guard and to start a military school for future officers; today's Coast Guard Academy.
The house has been slightly modified and was the rectory of St. Ignatius Church in 2008.
The Kimball family (except for Sumner) are buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford. Sumner died in Washington D.C., and is buried in his wife's family plot in Augusta.
