James Foss Davis, Ellsworth, ca. 1875

Description

James F. Davis, the first mayor of Ellsworth (1817-1897), was born in Hollis. In 1841 he went to work for older brother, Simeon, who ran a mill at Ellsworth Falls.

He became a selectman in 1860 and mayor in 1869 when Ellsworth adopted a new city charter and new form of government. Davis defeated John B. Redman by a vote of 318 to 198.

He was married to Eleanor Lord Davis. They had five children.
