Description
This photograph shows a large part of the ice harvesting operation on the Presque Isle Stream in the winter of 1965- 1966. Shown on the left is Chet Payne and on the right is Laurance "Minnie" Willette.
Tools shown in the foreground are an ice sieve and an ice shaver. In the center of the photo the men are using ice picks to guide ice chunks from the stream to the conveyor. A block of ice is shown riding up the conveyor to storage. In the back the gentleman are scooping snow from the ice.
What appears to be an ice saw is laying on the snowbank in the left background. Each ice block is approximately 20 inches x 24 inches by 18 inches. These ice blocks were eventually put into Bangor and Aroostook refrigerator cars for shipping potatoes.
Joe Gagnon purchased the ice operation from Cecil McCready in 1946 and ran the business until the mid 60s.
