James Cary Jr., Brunswick, ca. 1862

Description

In about 1805, James Cary Jr. (1790-1865) became an apprentice to Robert Eastman, an established clockmaker. In 1806, they became partners under the name of Eastman & Cary.

Cary bought out his partner in about 1809.

Cary lived his whole life in Brunswick. The photograph was taken in 1862 when Cary was 72.

Aaron L. Dennison (1812-1895), who asked to help in the clock shop when he was a young child, became an apprentice and later invented machine-made watches.
