Blocked-end tubes, East Machias, ca. 550 BCE

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

These tubes probably were used for smoking tobacco. They were excavated in East Machias in the 1860s.

The tubes are made of a stone found only in Ohio and provide important evidence of an early trade network between Maine and western Indians.
