Film of sewer line work, Portland, ca. 1940

Description

The Federal Works Progress Administration assisted Portland and other communities with public works projects in 1940 and 1941.

This film excerpt shows laborers blasting a ledge along the route of a new sewer line in Portland.

Workers used jack hammers, sledge hammers, picks and shovels. They drove in pilings along the edge of the trench, warmed the trench rock to be used in making cement and warmed the bricks. The cement mixer poured cement into carts and the laborers dumped it into the forms below. When the cement base was done, masons lined them with brick.

The film was taken ca. 1940 by the Portland Engraving Company for the city of Portland.
