Men's cottage, Maine State Sanatorium, Hebron, ca. 1905

Contributed by Maine Historic Preservation Commission

Description

The men's cottage at the Maine State Sanatorium at Hebron, probably about 1905.

This cottage was built in 1904, the year the Sanatorium opened, and was the Main Building until the Administration Building was completed in 1906.

Many of the cottages were built on a similar plan, with the side wings housing sleeping pavilions that allowed the tuberculosis patients to sleep in open air or fresh air with doors and windows ajar.

The hospital was incorporated in 1901 as a private sanatorium for pulmonary diseases. It was renamed the Western Maine Sanatorium in 1915 when the state took over operations.
