Description
Bertie M. Phillips of Oxford wrote to Dr. Estes Nichols, superintendent of the Maine State Sanatorium at Hebron, inquiring about a job.
She was responding to an advertisement for "girls" to wait tables and work as chambermaids. She offered her services and those of a friend if Nichols was interested in hiring "adult women" instead. Phillips was 49 years old at the time.
