Description
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited the National Youth Administration camp at Quoddy Village in Eastport on Sunday, June 22, 1941.
The National Youth Administration, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed young people ages 16-25 during the Great Depression.
The NYA camp, which opened in May 1937, was at the site of worker housing built for the Passamaquoddy Bay Tidal Power Project, which suspended operation in August 1936 when Congress failed to appropriate funds.
The article appeared in the Boston American, June 3, 1941. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a regular newspaper column about her activities.
