Description
Donald B. MacMillan, Commander of the schooner Bowdoin, is flanked by two men in this image taken prior to the departure of the Bowdoin and schooner Sachem III from Wiscasset.
At left is Stanley Field, president of the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, whose son, Joseph N. Field was a cabin boy on the expedition.
The man on the right could be John (Jack) T. Crowell, Captain of the Sachem III, or Ralph Porter Robinson of Merrimac, MacMillan's chief assistant, who had been with MacMillan on all three of the voyages the Bowdoin had made to date.
