Hannah Pierce on keeping school, 1817

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Hannah Pierce (1788-1873) wrote to her brother Josiah (1792-1866), who was in college in Brunswick.

Hannah was teaching in Fryeburg and told Josiah how unhappy she was. She said she could not help but be unhappy since the father she "loved and revered" had told her "he was glad" that she was going to leave home to teach.

She told him she hoped she could do well at teaching, a job she had held a number of times before, but that she was "sick of school keeping" and would get any other job she could to support herself so she did not have to keep school again.
