Description
Hannah Pierce (1788-1873) of Baldwin wrote to her brother Josiah Pierce of Gorham about her loneliness during the long winter.
Hannah, unmarried, lived in the family homestead. She comments, "surely, I, who am surrounded by so many memories, ought not to complain. health -- independence and their attendant blessings ought to inspire gratitude and the comforts of a good home of my own to compensate, in some measure, for the want of society."
She also comments on their brother Daniel who could not keep a job, "How can they live if he does nothing? Five dollars per week is but a small pittance, to support, a family of ten."
