Description
Hannah Pierce of Baldwin wrote to her brother Josiah of Gorham explaining why she could not loan him any money.
Hannah, who was single and lived on the family homestead, said she had expended her available funds to help their recently deceased brother Daniel, and to support her "family" -- a sister and nieces who lived with her.
"My scanty purse is quite exhausted and I have not now a Dollar on hand," she wrote.
Josiah, a lawyer and judge, was suffering from failed investments and an economic downturn.
