Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Josiah Pierce (1792-1866) of Gorham discusses his ill health in a letter to his sister Hannah Pierce (1788-1873) of Baldwin. He also sends her money -- interest from a savings bond and interest he owes her.

He discusses his lack of funds and the rising cost of wood, hay, other items and taxes.

He writes, "I can no longer help my children, but my sons are very good to their sisters, & parents."

Pierce died June 25, 1866, about a year after he wrote the letter.
