Description
The 1916 Nasson Insitute class photograph. George Nasson, who died in 1882, provided in his will for the eventual creation of an "Institute for the education of Young Ladies." Thirty years later, thanks to the efforts of the local business leader Harmon G. Allen, the institute came into being.
The first building of the Nasson Insitute, shown above, was dedicated January 24, 1913. The total cost of the building and its equipment was $16,139.57. The Institute was modeled on Simmons College in Boston and offered two year courses in home economics and secretarial science. Many of its early graduates went on to become teachers, head dietitians in hospitals and other institutes, and secretaries to high ranking executives.
