Description
Several men from Orr's Island inspect the body of a dead, beached whale on Ragged Island.
Captain William Sylvester of Orr's Island, a whaler of 40 years' experience out of New Bedford, helped supervise the process of cutting up the carcass.
The blubber was sold for paint and the meat used for lobster bait. Captain Sylvester estimated that the carcass would bring about $250.
