Description
Samantha Smith (1972-1985) poses with a Russian police officer in Moscow in July 1983. She and her parents spent two weeks in the Soviet Union at the invitation of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov.
Smith, a schoolgirl from Manchester, had written to Andropov expressing her concern about a possible nuclear war and asking him what his plans were.
She became known as an ambassador for peace. She and her father, Arthur, were killed in a plane crash in Auburn in 1985.
