Description
Samantha Smith (1972-1985) poses in front of a store's sign upon her return from a two-week trip to the Soviet Union in July 1983.
She and her parents, Arthur and Jane Smith, visited the Soviet Union as guests of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov after Samantha wrote to him asking what his plans were about nuclear war and urged peace.
She became known as a peace ambassador. She and her father were killed in a plane crash in 1985.
