Description
Jane Smith (left center) and her daughter, Samantha Smith, 11, of Manchester, watch a dance performed in their honor during a two-week visit to the Soviet Union in July 1983.
Samantha and her parents were invited to visit the Soviet Union after Samantha wrote to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov asking if he planned to start a nuclear war and urged peace. He assured her the Soviets wanted peace.
