Description
Samantha Smith (1972-1985), 10, of Manchester, holding a letter she received from Yuri Andropov, general secretary of the Soviet Union, in which he assured her that he did not want war.
Smith wrote to him asking his intentions about a war and advocated for peace. When her letter was printed in the Soviet newspaper Pravada but she had not received a reply from Andropov, she wrote to the Soviet Ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Dobrynin, asking if she would get a reply.
Andropov then wrote to her and invited her and her parents to visit the Soviet Union which they did in July 1983.
