Description
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an avid reader and well-known author. Best known for The House of Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter, he also wrote many short stories.
His family lived for a time in Raymond, and he attended Bowdoin College. This photograph shows Hawthorne about 1860.
