Description
Ten-year-old Samantha Smith, on the playground at Manchester Elementary School, wrote a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov expressing her concern about mounting tensions between the Soviet Union and the U.S.
The Soviet newspaper Pravda printed part of the letter.
Smith later got a reply from Andropov who invited her and her parents to visit the Soviet Union, which they did in July 1983.
