Description
Samantha Smith (1972-1985) at the Portland Jetport on her way to Japan to speak at the Children's International Symposium for the 21st Century.
Smith became well-known after writing to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov with her concerns about nuclear war and receiving a reply from him.
In July 1983, she and her parents, Jane and Arthur Smith, visited the Soviet Union for two weeks at the invitation of Andropov.
