Description
A violin made by Freelan Oscar Stanley (1849-1940) in Kingfield, Maine in 1865. F.O. Stanley made a toy violin for himself when he was a 10-year-old boy. This violin is believed to be his first full-sized instrument, made when he was 16 years old. The violin is signed in ink "F.O Stanley 1865" directly on the wood interior.
F.O. Stanley continued to make violins as a hobby through-out his life. Together with his twin brother, Francis Edgar Stanley (1849-1918), he produced a select number of concert-quality instruments after careful study of classic violins produced by Italian masters. After his retirement from the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, F.O. Stanley set up a home-based violin-making shop with his nephew, Carlton Fairfield Stanley (1871-1956), in Newton, Massachusetts. F.O. Stanley is believed to have produced over 200 instruments in his career.
