Horn antenna truck, Andover, 1962

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

One of four trucks that ride on two sets of concentric rails to give the Project Telstar horn antenna at Andover 360-degree azimuth rotation.

The 340-ton antenna, inside the giant radome at "Space Hill" in Andover, needs to be positioned exactly to pick up signals from the passing Telstar satellite.

The system began operating in July 1962 and made possible the first live television transmission across the Atlantic.
