Description

A view of the southernmost mouth of Portland Harbor, looking toward the tents and buildings of Fort Preble in the background.

The fort, built in 1808, served as a guard to the main channel of the inner harbor.

Note the sign on the shack that advertised Salva-Cea, a cure-all medicine. The sign reads, "Cures Rheumatism."
