Col. Harmon's attack on Somerset Point, 1722

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Col. Harmon, who moved from York to Harpswell in 1727, was stationed at Arrowsic in July 1722.

He and Maj. Moody took two whale boats to to Merrymeeting Bay to aid in a fire in Brunswick, which he assumed was set by Indians. On his way, he saw a campfire at Somerset Point and found a number of Indians sleeping around it.

Harmon and Moody fired two volleys on the Indians, then left, unsure of how many were killed.

This account, along with a song, was written at least 60 years after the incident.
