Main Street, Ellsworth, ca. 1910

Contributed by Penobscot Marine Museum

Description

The gateway from the south to Ellsworth’s Main Street business district was this steel bridge, which was swept away in a May 1923 flood that caused $300,000 in damage to the town.

The old crossing was quickly replaced by a new concrete arched span known as the Union River Bridge.
