Campaign button for Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith used in her 1964 presidential campaign.
Skowhegan's Margaret Chase Smith ran for president in 1964 and took her campaign all the way to the Republican National Convention where she placed second to Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater. She was the first woman to have her name placed in nomination by a major political party.
