Contributed by Margaret Chase Smith Library

Description

U.S. Representative Smith lends a hand as part of her Inspection tour of the Pacific war theater with the House Naval Affairs Committee in 1944. The committee covered over 24,000 miles in just seventeen days, visiting Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Samoan Islands, Guam, Saipan, Manus, Australia, and the Johnston Islands.
The tour led her to pursue a variety of measures, during and after the war, to equalize opportunities for women.

Born in Skowhegan in 1897, she was elected to the House of Representatives in 1940 and to the U.S. Senate in 1948. She served until 1973.
