Description
Employees of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, which began service through Brownville in 1889, were asked to contribute one day's pay to build a Y.M.C.A. by the rail line in Brownville Junction.
Ground was broken in 1917 for the three-story building that had dormitories (for rail employees), showers, baths, reading rooms, a restaurant, recreation equipment, a banquet room, and facilities for Canadian Pacific dignitaries.
The Y was the center of many community activities.
The railroad determined it could not continue to maintain the building and, in 1965, it was turned over to the town. It was demolished in 1966.
