Description
The four-masted 184' Schooner Ella M. Willey, 841 tons, was built by Dunn and Elliot in 1891. She had a 37.8' beam, a depth of 17.2' and a crew of eight. Her captain was Walter B. Willey.
This photo of the schooner Ella M. Willey shows the vessel in difficulty. She appears low in water, is awash amidships and her sails are down and in disarray. The stern boat is missing from the davits and she appears to have been abandoned.
Most of the Dunn and Elliot vessels were named after family and close friends or business associates. Ella M. Willey, daughter of Captain Walter B. and Annie L. Willey of Thomaston, married Richard Elliot Dunn on October 14, 1886.
