Description
The monument to Col. John Allan, which is on Treat's Island, was dedicated in August 1860 and bears the names of Allan's descendants.
John Allan was born in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, on January 3, 1746. He died February 7, 1805 in Lubec.
He was commissioned by Washington as a colonel in the Continental Army and was a member of Washington's personal staff. He also served as commander of the Machias Militia from 1776-1783.
He assisted in the negotiations to establish the northeast boundary of Maine, and served as superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Eastern Department under General George Washington.
