Description
Lubec, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. This image graphically displays the basaltic cliffs so dangerous to mariners entering Lubec Channel. The light station here dates from 1808; the tower shown is the third from 1858. The foreground building houses coal-fired steam boilers powering, among other devices, the two whistles on the roof. visible to the right of each stack. These steam whistles provided aural warning during fog in the era preceeding the diaphone and the modern foghorn. The lightkeepers’ house lies in the background, partially obscured. In the far distance, across the water, may be seen Campopbello Island, New Brunswick, Canada.
