Description
Named the "Torrent," the hand-operated pumper served well even after 1902 when Lubec installed a municipal fire hydrant system.
William Jeffers & Company of Pawtucket, R.I., built the Torrent in 1862 for Marlboro, Massachusetts. The town of Eastport bought it in 1876 and Lubec bought it for $125 in 1892.
It assisted with major fires including the conflagration of the North Lubec can plant in 1907, and at Lubec School when it burned on November 26, 1913.
The image is on an unused postcard. Handwritten in the lower left corner is “Lubec Firemen Photo by A. B. Jessaman.”
Lubec contracted with Boston photographer Jessaman to photograph its Centennial Celebration, so the photo probably was taken July 3, 1911, the date of the Centennial/July 4 parade.
