Description
Several aspects of harvesting potatoes can be seen in this photograph. In the left center, two horses are pulling a potato digger. The digger has a motor on it to run the mechanical parts of the digger. The teamster is riding on the back of the digger. The man standing beside the digger is a potato picker. His job is to pick the potatoes from the ground and put them in the barrels. You can see a basketful of potatoes in front of him. These potatoes will be dumped into a barrel. The truck in front of the horses will be loaded with full barrels to be delivered to potato storage.
This photograph was taken near where edgemont Drive is today near Presque Isle Middle School. The farm had to be abandoned in 1943 to make room for the Army Air Force.
