Description
This 1941 black and white photograph of Centre Street looking east, from just west of the Washington Street intersection, shows a dense commercial landscape. None of the buildings on the various corners of that intersection has survived. In fact, nine of the buildings showing along Centre Street have vanished due to the desire for more modern spaces or parking lots. The Music Hall on the northeast corner of the intersection was torn down later this same year. The three-year-old traffic light, the first and only in Bath in this period, regulates the growing traffic in the commercial business district. The preparations for World War II brought thousands of people to the city to live and/or to work in the shipyards of Bath Iron Works.
