Description
This postcard, postmarked July 15,1915, was mailed from "L.N.C." in Bath to Mrs. G. C. Allen of Duxbury, Massachusetts and depicted, in a colorized and enhanced photograph, the Sagadahock Block, also sometimes referred to as Sagadahoc Square or Thompson's Corner.
The Sagadahock Block was begun in 1894, not long after a January fire destroyed the 1849 Sagadahoc House hotel and several of its neighbors on this site. Designed by John Calvin Stevens, the structure held retail and office space, with additional large meeting spaces for fraternal organizations. A hotel was not included in the new building.
The businesses pictured include: the barber pole and shop of Charles E. Stinson on the Centre Street facade; the clothing store of George E. and Frank N. Thompson; the Hallet Drug Store run by Fred C. Cox; the Smith Stationey [and sporting goods] store run by Edward B. Smith; the jewelry establishment of Albert G. Page, Jr.; and, in the neighboring building, the jeweler Charles W. Clifford.
The message on the back communicated that LNC was "having lunch in Bath, then on to Boothbay and stay a couple of days with Mary. Lovely Day, but roads awful."
