Description
This modern copy of a period postcard photograph shows another part of Merchants' Row, the heart and oldest part of downtown Bath. The businesses pictured suggest a date of approximately 1910, as the central business district has recovered from still another fire. As the Greek-Revival brick stores of Merchants' Row itself were largely constructed in the building boom after that 1837 fire, the commercial structures, some enthusiastically billboarded, at the far end of the street in this image, were constructed right after the fires of the 1890s. The trolley tracks, which appeared in the 1890s, are also visible in this photograph. At the center of the image is the four-storied structure, the Elliott Block. The Elliott House, taller than all the other commercial and residential structures of the downtown, opened in the fall of 1838. The "Lincoln Telegram" of September 1838, stated that the hotel was "made conspicuous from all parts of the village and when approached by water or land is plainly seen towering above all others, presenting a lofty and splendid appearance; adding much to the beauty and respectability of the place."
