Description
This unused postcard photograph of the Sagadahock Block on the NW corner of Front and Centre Streets (Thompson's Corner) pictured the Bath local trolley in foreground. Divided-back postcards of this sort were printed from 1907 to 1914. The trolley is heading south on Front Street and turning west onto Centre Street. Trolleys in Bath started in 1893 and ceased to run in 1937. The local system was expanded in 1897 and the name changed the following year to the Lewiston, Brunswick & Bath Street Railway. By 1900 a new line connected Brunswick and Yarmouth, making it possible to travel from Bath to New York City by Trolley.
The Sagadahoc Block, designed by John Calvin Stevens, was built in 1894, after a fire early in the year destroyed the hotel on this corner and its neighboring buildings. The Thompson clothing store was run by George E. and Frank N. Thompson. The Thompson Brothers Store operated under this name at this location from the initial construction of the Sagadahock Block until about 1930. Inlaid brass letters in the sidewalk at the corner of Front and Centre Streets still noted this as Thompson's Corner in 2009.
