Description
This photograph of the Sagadahock House in Bath was taken on January 24th, 1894, only three days before the hotel was destroyed in a fire. The Greek Revival structure with its forest of chimneys and modified Italianate entrance was located at the intersection of Front and Centre streets, dominating landscape of downtown Bath.
Establishments to the right of the Sagadahock House include the Lincoln National Bank, the Hallett drugstore run by Fred C. Cox and Augustus Harris, the stationery store of John O. Shaw, J. Lufkin Douglas' clothing store, and the Marine National Bank. Many of these business were well-established and had been in this location for a long time. The Lincoln Bank had been on this site since 1812, and the Marine Bank had its headquarters at the Sagadahock House since its formation in 1864.
