Description
George Washington Pierce, who was studying law, wrote to his brother Josiah of Gorham that he did not think it would be appropriate to accept a job in the treasurer's office.
He explained that he did not think he had the appropriate skills and that he did not want to injure the feelings of lawyer Stephen Longfellow, apparently a competitor of Mr. Anderson, the treasurer.
Pierce later married Stephen Longfellow's daughter, Anne.
