Description
George Washington Pierce (1805-1835), an 1825 graduate of Bowdoin College and a lawyer, was traveling west, looking for a place to open his law practice.
He wrote to his parents while on board a steam boat from Wheeling to Cincinnati, but wrote mostly about his visit to Mount Vernon and about Washington, D.C., where he visited for several weeks before heading west.
