Description
Baldwin native George W. Pierce (1805-1835) went West to look for a site for his law office and his career.
He wrote to his parents, Josiah and Phebe Pierce, from Trinity, Illinois, where he was stuck due to cold weather and ice on the Mississippi River. He had expected to be in St. Louis by the time he wrote the letter.
He noted that the roads were so bad and the weather so uncomfortable that travel by land also was impossible.
He also described the countryside.
