G.W. Pierce note about father's illness, 1829

Description

George Washington Pierce, recently returned from a Western trip and staying with his parents in Baldwin, wrote to his brother Josiah Pierce of Gorham, that their father, Josiah Pierce, was quite ill.

The elder Josiah, an early settler of Baldwin, was involved in various business pursuits including a potash factory, many sawmills and timbering. He was involved in politics and was a justice of the peace. Born in 1756, he died two months after this note, on Jan. 23, 1830.
